ROTHNEUSIEDL

Climate-effective into the future

In Vienna's 10th district, a pioneering neighbourhood for climate protection is being created with numerous green and open spaces, urban agriculture and sustainable housing.

In RothNEUsiedl, a lighthouse project for climate protection is being developed on a total of 124 hectares. One third of the area will be designed as climate-friendly green and open space and will serve as a model for future projects.

Around 9,000 homes for 21,000 people and 8,000 jobs are planned for the newly developed area. Almost two thirds of the buildable area will be dedicated to affordable housing. The focus is on affordable SMART flats and innovative housing models for single parents as well as special forms of housing for elderly residents. The connection to the U1 underground line will create an effectively connected, sustainable neighbourhood with a high quality of life for the population from 2030.

With around 40 hectares of green space, Roth-Neusiedl is set to become a pioneering project for climate protection and climate change adaptation. Alternative energy supply and circular economy aspects are at the forefront of the planning.

The project pays particular attention to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, using rainwater innovatively and achieving natural cooling in summer. In addition, urban agriculture also offers a cooling effect through green roofs and façades. The agricultural use of buildings also brings food production into the immediate living and working environment and raises awareness of local food production.

Future residents and businesses can play an active role in the design and are invited to engage in intensive dialogue with the municipal authorities, planners and experts. The ‘RothNEUsiedl Future Team’ was established as an innovative format for various forms of participation. 14 drawn citizens and 7 representatives from science, agriculture, civil society and citizens' initiatives form the interface between the population and planners.

The participatory process in RothNEUsiedl is also supported by the EU Commission's ‘New European Bauhaus’ (NEB) initiative. The aim is to achieve climate neutrality by 2040, with research, innovation and culture playing a key role. Sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion will also be firmly anchored in the mission statement process. The entire process will be scientifically supported by the ‘NEB-RothNEUsiedl’ research project and funded as part of the FFG research programme ‘FIT4NEB - Preparation for the planned EU mission New European Bauhaus’.
