SONNWENDVIERTEL – A NEW URBAN QUARTER

Relaxing in Vienna’s green spaces

Approx. 5,500 flats – including more than 2,000 subsidised units – for over 13,000 residents were built in the Sonnwendviertel neighbourhood.

A large portion of the housing projects was developed in co-operation with wohnfonds_wien and the Urban Renewal Offices (Gebietsbetreuungen Stadterneuerung, GB*), on an area formerly occupied by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) in the 10th municipal district.

Three developers’ competitions were organised for this area between 2009 and 2016. Several group-build projects with a total of 65 dwellings were evaluated by the Land Advisory Board. Following this, wohnfonds_wien launched a block renovation initiative for the neighbourhoods adjoining the new developments to promote the revitalisation of older built stock.

The heart of the new urban quarter is a pedestrian zone with local enterprises, meeting points for all generations, a library and an adult education centre. The new education campus comprises a kindergarten, an all-day elementary school and a New Middle School (lower secondary level).

Helmut-Zilk-Park, which extends over roughly 7 hectares and accommodates a playground, community gardens and a restaurant, offers residents recreation and relaxation in a green environment “around the corner”.
