SMARTER TOGETHER

Vienna – a lighthouse city

“Smarter Together” is the name of a joint Smart City project of Vienna, Munich and Lyon that is co-funded under the H2020 Framework Programme of the European Union. The European “lighthouse cities” Vienna, Munich and Lyon, the “follower cities” Santiago de Compostela, Sofia and Venice as well as the observer cities Kiev and Yokohama joined forces to improve the quality of life of their citizens, e.g. by means of measures fostering innovative solutions for the rehabilitation of large-scale housing estates as well as for local energy solutions, e-mobility and data management.

These solutions are developed by closely involving the local population and always incorporate a social dimension. “Smarter Together” prepares the ground for the comprehensive replication of Smart City solutions and in-depth knowledge transfer. In particular, this also includes business models and user-centred innovations aimed at creating a positive contribution to society as a whole.

Vienna’s “Smarter Together” urban renewal/project area is situated in the 11th municipal district, between Simmeringer Hauptstrasse and the Ostbahn railway line (Geiselberg, Enkplatz and Braunhuberviertel neighbourhoods). In all, 21,000 inhabitants benefit from smart solutions in such fields as rehabilitation, energy, mobility and IT/communication technologies.

The goal lies in making Simmering an innovative and eco-friendly district, thus contributing to higher quality of life in Vienna overall. This is achieved by foresighted Smart City solutions developed jointly by all partners and local inhabitants. “Smarter Together” is currently the No. 1 Smart City urban renewal initiative and involves numerous players in Vienna.

Moreover, Vienna’s innovative “Smarter Together” project has already garnered numerous recognitions in various categories, e.g. the title of “Global Green City” or the “Green Solutions Award II”.
