IBA MEETS SCHOOLS

Future tenants

Housing in Vienna is a highly complex issue. A joint project with the title “Housing in Vienna” (“Wohnen in Wien”) was developed in tandem with the Board of Education for Vienna to increase the interest of children and young people in social housing construction and the housing sector in general.

Simple teaching materials were prepared by experts together with teachers and can now be used in classrooms, for school projects and school-related activities. They address important issues, e.g. the history of social housing construction in Vienna, facts about the housing market for young people and many others.

MieterHilfe meets schools

In addition to IBA_Vienna, the tenancy helpdesk MieterHilfe has likewise been active in schools for many years and is available for thematic presentations, talks or school trips to the MieterHilfe premises (seminar room). In this way, young people can learn about their rights and options at an early date. After all, many things need to be considered in the process from flat hunting to signing a tenancy contract.

Thus, the information module teaches youngsters how to correctly “read” real-estate ads, what criteria to apply when choosing a dwelling or how to deal with landlords, understand the various components that make up the monthly rent or conclude a tenancy contract. In addition to basic legal information, practical examples are drawn upon to teach young people how rents are calculated, what difference there is between gross and net rent and what the various items of a monthly rent statement stand for.
