Information on refurbishment and redesign
These experts inform the owners of residential buildings eligible for restructuring about the available possibilities and facilities for the rehabilitation of entire urban blocks or single residential buildings.
Every year, around 12,000 subsidised dwellings are rehabilitated within the framework of “gentle urban renewal”. This markedly improves the quality of housing and living, which in its turn upgrades the surrounding urban quarter. Subsidies are disbursed for the rehabilitation of residential buildings and residential homes as well as for the modernisation and retrofitting of buildings.
Since 2020, inhabitants of Vienna, flat or house owners as well as property management companies may draw on HAUSKUNFT – a free-of-charge, independent service centre of wohnfonds_wien – to obtain comprehensive renovation and refurbishment counselling. HAUSKUNFT offers a great variety of services including future-readiness checks or the support of subsidised renovation concepts, which are further developed and expanded on an ongoing basis.

The focus of rehabilitation subsidies is mainly on energy efficiency and energy savings, e.g. by means of thermally insulated façades, and on the creation of additional living space for individual dwellings, such as balconies.
However, it is also made sure that historic façades and artworks are restored or renewed in the process, thereby preserving the history of the district for future generations.
