SMART BLOCK_Geblergasse

Innovation for the future

The block extending between Geblergasse, Hernalser Gürtel, Ottakringer Strasse and Veronikagasse in Vienna’s 17th municipal district Hernals was rendered fit for the future by comprehensively rehabilitating and restructuring the buildings in Geblergasse 11 and 13. The renovation of these residential buildings was scientifically monitored and evaluated in the context of a research project (Smart Block II).

The focus of the research project supported by the Climate and Energy Fund was on the overall renovation of a Gründerzeit urban block, which was to include a system of alternative energy supply extending across the individual plots. An energy generation plant based on the use of geothermal and solar energy was installed.

Comprehensive conservation and improvement measures including the creation and design of open spaces were implemented. After the rehabilitation, balconies, terraces, arcaded walkways and tenant gardens are now situated at all levels of house No. 11. Moreover, the roof storey was converted into residential units; a lift and communal areas were added as well. In all, 25 dwellings in two properties were thus created on a useful floorspace of approx. 1,770 sqm.

The pilot project “SMART BLOCK Geblergasse 11 + 13” in Hernals was honoured as a winner at the 35th Vienna Urban Renewal Awards.

The project, which received the “Goldenes Güteziegel” (“Golden Brick/Seal of Quality”) in the “Pioneering Achievement” category, impresses above all with its innovative power: This first-ever implementation of a sustainable anergy network in a Gründerzeit urban block fully convinced the jury.
